New Texas Laws Taking Effect in 2025: What You Need to Know
As we ring in 2025, several significant changes to Texas law are set to take effect tomorrow. From simplified vehicle registration to enhanced data privacy protections, here’s what Texans can expect in the new year.
Goodbye Annual Vehicle Inspections (HB 3297)
Perhaps the most noticeable change for Texas drivers is the elimination of mandatory safety inspections for non-commercial vehicles. Instead of the traditional inspection process, vehicle owners will pay a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee during registration. However, drivers in metropolitan areas should note that emissions testing requirements remain in place for counties including Harris, Dallas, Travis, and several others.
Stronger Data Privacy Protections (HB4)
The Texas Data Privacy and Security Act enters its next phase, giving consumers more control over their personal information. The new provisions allow Texans to use browser settings and device preferences to opt out of data collection and targeted advertising across multiple platforms simultaneously.
Property Tax Relief (from SB2 in 2023)
The Property Tax Relief Act continues to roll out new provisions aimed at providing stability and relief for property owners. The latest phase includes limitations on appraisal value increases for properties without homestead exemptions, offering more predictable tax rates for property owners.
Judicial System New District Court (Bill Text)
The state’s judicial system is expanding with the creation of the 477th Judicial District in Denton County, helping address growing caseloads and improve access to justice.
